MythTV Install

I installed MythTV on RedHat Fedora Core 1….

MythTV is a “homebrew PVR project” from several developers (namely Issac Richards) aimed at making a PVR (similar to Tivo, ReplayTV) on steroids. MythTV is developed under the OpenSource model (GNU, etc.), so it is free, which is another reason many people like it. I can’t see how anyone could justify it being cheaper than, say a TIVO, since the hardware required to make it work really well is expensive (it’s a computer), and it definitely isn’t easier to set up (easy is: to go to the store, buy a tivo, and plug it in), not to mention the comparison is moot, since MythTV has tons more features/extras/gadgets.

I used a walkthrough, called Fedora Myth(TV)ology, byJarod C. Wilson, and it was pretty good.

I have a few additions, though:
I had to previously build my nvidia nForce2 ethernet drivers from kernel source, but went with precompiled rpms from the latest kernel (that apt-get is really tight) this time.

I had to add the apt-get-kickstart and apt-get rpms in order to resolve a dependency with the aptrpms-kmdl-helper when installing the kernel-module for the forcedeth drivers — it’s hard to apt-get updates over the network, to make your network card work, when your network card doesn’t work yet (got it?).

I also got a few errors on the apt-get updates, problems with docbook-dtds, but all is well.

A few updates: the hauppauge remote works fabulously and pretty soon I’m going to hook it up to the main TV in the living room.

This is just one step in my techno-tronnifying our condo! The kitchen is part one!
