scary cool
Wow, that google is just too cool for school. I’ve been hosting my own e-mail server(s) now for a couple of years. I’m no stranger to setting up a pretty good mail server using all the tricks: qmail, virtual domains, multiple aliases, mailing lists, IMAP and POP3 over SSL, spamassassin (and razor, pyzor, dcc), some other filters (qmail-scanner), etc., etc.
So, it actually should come as a surprise that i would, on a whim, decide to sign up for google’s gmail for domains. I reluctantly decided to switch over my MX servers and let google handle my mail for an hour or so (I run my own dns (see: dns replication using rsync), so the MX record was updated across my DNS servers, I hit reload, google found it, and if I switch it back, no harm done with a 3600 second expiry).
It’s actually, exactly what I thought it would be. Just plain and simply, cool. I’m not sure how it’s still going to work if want to still use IMAP and my folders using my Mac Mail (or thunderbird client), but if it works out good, I may just start using it. I don’t like being limited by the 2GB (I know it’s overkill, but I own the server, so there is no limit for me), but I do like the nice web interface. I’m just still a snob for a fat client, and mac mail is doing the half-way decent job right now.
Well, we’ll just have to see how it goes. It’s been more than an hour, and the first real messages just started to come in. So far, it’s gmail, but with my e-mail address. Very scarily cool.
