on HP Proliant

Installing gentoo (2005.1) on an HP Proliant DL 360.

This box has dual P3 933s, a Compaq Smart Array 5300 with hardware RAID on a single 36.4 GB Ultra SCSI.

First, read up here:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_HP_Proliant_DL580
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=10380&highlight=compaq+raid

When configuring the kernel, be sure to add

Block Devices
-> Compaq Smart Array 5xxx

And the Intel e100 network cards.

and you will then be able to access /dev/cciss/c0d0px devices.

The notes on using mkdev.cciss in the gentoo forum post are obsolete, the new Compaq Smart Array support in the kernel automatically creates those devices as opposed to the old: /dev/host0/channel0/drive1 method.
